Your goal: the right fit for your family, lifestyle and personality. While socialization and training inform your puppy’s behavior, breed also matters, as does the individual and other factors. And if you decide on a purebred dog, finding a responsible breeder is key.

Different breeds have different traits, characteristics and behavior tendencies. Do your research. Talk with friends who have different types of dogs—and meet their dogs. Think about the kind of dog that will best suit you, your family, what’s important to you and what you like to do. This might take some time, but the wait will be worth it!

+when should I bring my puppy home?

When she is 8 weeks old (give or take a few days). Good breeders require their puppies to stay with their littermates until they’re 8 weeks old so they can learn critical lessons from their dog mom and siblings during the initial socialization phase. If a breeder is willing to let you take a puppy home earlier, cross that breeder off your list.

+should I get two puppies from the same litter?
