choosing the right puppy
consider your options
Getting a puppy is a big deal that involves many important considerations, including
where to get your pup—shelter/rescue, responsible breeder…
what breed to go with—working or non-working, large or small, long- or short-haired, hypo-allergenic or not…
how to choose the right individual
decide what you want
Your goal: the right fit for your family, lifestyle and personality. While socialization and training inform your puppy’s behavior, breed also matters, as does the individual and other factors. And if you decide on a purebred dog, finding a responsible breeder is key.
do the research
Different breeds have different traits, characteristics and behavior tendencies. Do your research. Talk with friends who have different types of dogs—and meet their dogs. Think about the kind of dog that will best suit you, your family, what’s important to you and what you like to do. This might take some time, but the wait will be worth it!
